That is a standard union/collectivist argument. The bottom line for anyone who has had experience with the educational system is that tenure results in some teachers and professors that are poor performers and feel free to teach a personal agenda.
Why is it necessary to have tenure in education and nowhere else?

Good point, Phil....
I am ignorant of all the politics involved in the NEA, but isn't it possible that tenure is the fuel for the longevity of the teachers' union?
