Yikes!
Amazing videos. They are reporting deaths in the hundreds. I would think that is way, way low. This is very densely populated country, although it looks like there was quite a bit of open space in some of these areas.
Huge quake, tsunami, fires, maybe a nuclear meltdown. Where the heck do you even start to clean up?

That is surprising about the Nuke power plants. I had been under the impression that Japan's buildings and infrastructure were some of the most advanced in the world in regards to being earthquake proof.

I'm hearing that it was more of a lack of electricity to pump cooling water rather than structural problems. They go hand in hand, though.

This earthquake and tsunami were probably at the upper limits of the design parameters. It’s not possible or affordable to engineer everything to withstand any possible catastrophe.
All things considered, it looks like things would’ve been a whole lot worse if this had happened in a third world country. Being a wealthy country definitely has its advantages.

It was reported yesterday that the nuke plant that is affected is 44 years old. It was built to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake. So Phil is correct, the designs are being challenged by mother nature.
We watched a lot of footage yesterday at the fire station. It is unbelievable to watch some of it. We were discussing "what would we do" if faced with any of this. I said "where do you begin?"
The force within the waves is simply incredible.

Those are great.
No matter how much of these we see it’s still impossible to wrap your mind around the extent of this disaster.

Cooler, and unbiased, heads have been saying much the same thing right along, but they don’t get much exposure in the mainstream media. The alarmists, many with an agenda, are readily featured.

Video shot from the roof of a tall building. It gives a different perspective from what we've seen before.
